Matriach
Martha ~ Nana
“The greatest joy of becoming a mother was having my kids. Raising them and watching them grow up.”
UnPolished the Blog is pleased to announce it’s first interview. This week I had my first guest, Martha J. AKA my N A N A (Abuelita). This beauty turned EIGHTY-TWO this week and although she does not celebrate her birthday I always acknowledge every year she turns another year older. She is the M A T R I A R C H of our Family. She has been holding us down by herself for the last 13 Years. I could not be more grateful for this WOMAN.
If you asked me what my first memory was of her I would tell you that she’s always been there. I was fortunate enough to have my grandparents play a huge part in raising me. I made her a grandmother. This woman poured so much of her time, energy, love and discipline into me and it shows. We have had thirty-six beautiful years and counting together. We have so many memories together some U N P O L I S H E D ones but those are for the vault. But when I tell you WE HAVE L I V E D. Slumber parties at her house eating ice cream watching grease or working girl. We would talk about what it would be like to work in a high rise in an office. Sometimes she would let me fall asleep to Golden Girls.
Summers we spent together would be in the garden learning how to grow fruit and tending to her compost. We would whip up M U D PIES for days.
She has been by my side through every major milestone. Nana you have truly made my life so sweet. Thank you for the hard love and stability when I needed it the most.UnPolished the Blog is pleased to announce it’s first interview. This week I had my first guest, Martha J. Becoming a Mother
Interview
Q: Welcome to UnPolished the Blog Martha. I wanted to interview you today because we always talk about taking the time to do this but we never have actually accomplished a sit down interview. You have play such a big role in my life and I would love to share your journey of motherhood as you are the Matriarch of our Family. What was your favorite thing about being a child?
Martha: “Thanks for having me Mija..What an interesting question. Stability, a Mother and a Father that both cared for us. My daddy worked at the railroad and my mother was at home for us. I would come home from school for lunch and my mama always had food ready for us warm tortillas and beans. That’s what I call stability my father was there to provide and my mother provided for us at the home. A lot of kids don’t have that anymore. Ally my friends and gradparents were on the same street as us. My Dads parents made their way to this country from Aquas Caliente in 1916. My Moms parents came from mexico too but the timeline is blurry to me now.”
Q: Nana what was your dream job when you were a little girl?
Martha: “My dream job was to be a secetary in an office. (she laughs and sighs) The closest I got to that was working at the cleaners at a desk typing and punching the tickets at base laundry.”
Q: What was it like to become a mother?
Martha: “I was proud, I was pregnant and had a boy first because I wanted my husband to be proud of a boy. Then we had a girl later on and I was excited because I had always wanted a daughter. (laughs again) It was hard you know being a mother. I did not know it was going to be all that work. (sighs) I had the help of my Mother In Law. She helped me raise my kids and she loved them so much. (chokes up a bit) Mija I just wish she could of lived long enough to meet the great grandkids. She would of loved all of you just like she loved my kids. She was always so good to me and family. “
Q:What was the most important lesson of Motherhood?
Martha: (laughs) “Well Mija I think I look back and realize maybe I should of implemented different things with each kid. I should of focused less on providing material things and at times I should of given more space.”
Q: What was the greatest joy of Motherhood?
Martha: (laughs) “Well Mija, raising them of course. I was so proud of each one and I could tell you their attributes about them as babies. I was so proud to watch them grow up.”
Q: What is advice you would give Mothers today Nana?
Martha: “Focus on your Family. Keeping the family together it’s important for the kids.”
Closing Remarks: “Well Nana, thank you for taking the time to do this with me.” Martha: “Of course Mija!”
